I know this is off-the-wall starting comment, but let me make it stick!

Since I don't know where you are on your growth journey, I ned to address the situation where you are hiring entry level people for a short period of time. If a long-term career is not possible today in your business, how do you make working for you a good deal? 

Well that is story we are going to tell.

INTRODUCTION
I picked the basketball coach for a reason because they live in a world where all of their talent is transitory. Even if you are Coach Krzyzewski at Duke, the top basketball team in college basketball who can recruit the top high school talent, you only have them for 4 years. That doesn't take into account the allure of a multimillion dollar NBA contract so at best you can count on is 2 years and yet he wins championships - how does that happen?

OBJECTIVE
  1. How do I build a local (or regional / national) reputation for the best to start a career?

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW
As we have discussed in previous shows, each generation brings a different set of skills, aspirations, and challenges to the workforce. Also we have the same challenge as everyone us - finding enough of the right people to operate and grow a business. The simple fact is nobody ha]s a nursery outback growing employees so we need to face the reality that good people are out there - just not working for you.

What are today's employment challenges?
  • Work Ethic: do they understand hard work and commitment to the work contract? Their view of a work / life balance might it harder to fully employ their potential.
  • Aspirations: most people entering the workforce (GenZ) or available without a clear career (GenY), they expect more than is possible in the early stages of the career.
  • Potential Talent: many people have no idea what they are really good at and should pursue as a career. They might think they know but if they haven't been tested, their profession is yet to be revealed.

How of this looks like a daunting task but let's reverse the mindset - what a great opportunity to employ them and help in the journey. It is here the fundamental premise of today's show will build on.

What if you built the reputation with the younger workforce and their parents you company is the place to start?

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO
  1. Look at your branding - does it appeal to the people you are trying to recruit?
    1. Positive: what positive difference are you making in the lives - customers and the community.
    2. Compelling: you have a mission that people are willing to join. The vast majority of people are followers looking for a movement - provide it.
    3. Contribution: how to you intend to use employee talent, go beyond the time for money trade.
  2. What is company's reputation in the market you intend to recruit?
    1. Positive contributions to the community - what can you boast of?
    2. What are your 'alumni' saying about you?
  3. What is your advertizing / recruiting process? How do you screen prospects? and Most Importantly how do you onboard?
    1. Recruiting and screening resumes? How do you sort to identify who is not qualified to work for you?
    2. Interviewing for selection? How do you sort for people that are bad fit for the business?
  4. What type of personal develop conversations take place to understand their aspirations and talent?
    1. Personal time with the owner to share your vision and getting them on the same page?
    2. What do they need to make this job a win for them?
  5. What is the training plan to get them competent as quickly as possible? What is the plan for cross-training, getting proficient at every task - even the ones that might never do?
  6. Pay, Benefits, Pay4performance
    1. Why you pay what you pay and the benefits provided?
    2. How do they make more money?
