This week we build on Shows 1 - 5. Shows 1 & 2 we discussed those aspects of behavior that are hard-wired - the need for purpose. Given that we spend 60-70% of lives working, most individuals use their profession as a means to understand why we are here such a short period of time and lose everything material at death. Show 3 we covered the other side of the formula - how does our early experience nurture us and define how we pursuit purpose. We discussed the 2 major events that provide the context to the pursuit of purpose - parenting and major events. Some of those events are specific to your family experience with the remainder events everyone experiences. It is those shared experiences that creates generational similarities. Show 4 we grouped people into generations, terminology you are familiar with - Boomers or GenB, GenX, GenY (millennials), and Genz. The purpose for the breakdown is simple, each of these groups have different expectations on how to live their lives which allows us to understand how to attract and select people who are a fit for our business. Finally, last week in Show 5 we covered a change in mindset as an employer. If I cannot count on employing people long-term then the smart move is view my role as the developer of people especially if my employee base is younger - GenZ and GenY. INTRODUCTION Given this base of insight and approach the next part of the story is how to train and develop newcomers to build competence and commitment. OBJECTIVE
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Here is the fundamental issue - it is task specific - you look at an individual or team 1 task at a time. You Assess first their ability or competence - can they do the job, then Assess their willingness or commitment - will they do the job. Your decision on these 2 critical factors will determine what style of leadership they receive. Let’s look at the underlying issues. Ability or Competence:
Now’s move the discussion to - “is there a logical progression from one level to another”. There are 4 possible combinations - what happens in the real world.
