Introduction
What a year! As I look back on my own 2020, I recognized far more good than I remembered. How can we build toward a bold start to 2021?

On Episode 11, we are going to cover how to build a more resilient team; prepare for more effective meetings; improving communication in your virtual team; and wrapping up your year with a personal 2020 retreat.

It starts today, with building your toolkit and having the right reflections. Let’s start preparing for a big new year!

This season, we’re unpacking the tools you need to effectively connect and collaborate with your team. Ready to build your personal toolbox?

How do you handle the people side of your business? How are you developing your team? Acknowledging and appreciating? Showing you care and value your team members?

Leadership that moves beyond transaction to influence will build a strong, resilient team ready to tackle the challenges of day-to-day business.

Stress + Resilience
Everyone has a leadership voice, and teams perform at their best when each voice around the table is deeply heard, valued, and appreciated. As we all deal with the impact of COVID-19, we must be even more intentional with every relationship within our circles of influence. You can thrive by being aware of the stress behavior each Voice displays and offering both high support and high challenge.

Here is a list of common behaviors for each of the 5 Voices when they become greatly stressed.

Pioneers
Under stress, Pioneers may:
  • Fear failure if they can’t figure things out
  • Get irritated by details and lose their ability to generate new possibilities
  • Dominate conversations with impatience or anger
  • Withdraw from the outside world and overindulge in sensing activities

Connectors
Under stress, Connectors may:
  • Feel trapped in the quarantine because they feel cut off from others
  • Lose their normal sense of optimistic perspective and options
  • Withdraw from relationships and isolate
  • Become self-critical and not think about themselves logically

Guardians
Under stress, Guardians may:
  • Find it hard to use their typical calm and reasonable judgment and get caught up in imagining a negative and bleak future
  • Erupt outwardly in uncharacteristic emotions when life feels out of control
  • Feel alone and unable to communicate their feelings of distress and anxiety

Creative-Pioneers
Under stress, Creative-Pioneers may:
  • May express explosive anger, hurt, and/or fear in an uncharacteristic way
  • Feel embarrassed by their emotions and loss of control

Creative-Connectors
Under stress, Creative-Connectors may:
  • Have an overflow of ideas + overanalyze + perfectionism = feeling stuck
  • Feel harsh self-criticism, self-doubt, and feelings of failure
  • Escape by withdrawing and overindulging in sensing behaviors

Nurturers
Under stress, Nurturers may:
  • Become overly caring and overly present as they fear letting others down
  • Get caught up in imagining and feeling overwhelmed by negative possibilities
  • Become critical of themselves and others
  • Eventually feel exhausted and burned out

More Effective Meetings
How many meetings have you attended this year?

Let’s ask it this way: how many effective meetings have you attended this year?

One client at a major corporate employer spends all day, every day in virtual meetings. I asked when she gets actual work if she’s always in meetings.

Why do we torture ourselves with bad meetings?

Let’s talk through the 5 major meetings you need to have:
  1. 1-to-1 direct report meetings
  2. Daily 5: morning briefing
  3. Weekly 60: problem solving, major task initiatives
  4. Monthly Strat Plan: track progress on major goals, strategies
  5. Quarterly Retreat: get away, unplug, and plan out the next 12 weeks

Ready to explore meetings more in depth?

The
New Generation Leader Meeting Slayer workshop will help you slice and dice your meeting schedule into a well-oiled, productive machine. Reach out if you’re ready to host this workshop for your team!

Year-End Retreat
Find some time to reflect on 2020 and get ready for 2021. It’s like wrapping up the year with everything in order so you can hit the ground running when 2021 starts.

I had my own personal year-end mini retreat this week, and I didn’t even go anywhere. I hunkered down in my home office for an hour or two and worked through my year.

Here is the process I used:
  1. Look at the calendar: What did I accomplish this year? (Contacts, meetings, major accomplishments, big wins)
  2. What was I hoping to do that I didn't?
  3. What should next year look like?
  4. How can I get started with a first 12 week plan?
  5. What rules should I set for my weekly rhythm?
I set out a new weekly schedule, outlined blocks of time on my calendar for major activities, and I set a goal of trying this new rhythm for the first 12 weeks. After that, I’ll re-evaluate.
  6. Refresh my weekly task tracking sheet
I have a one-page printout I keep with my main notebook, and it includes: major goals, notes I need to write, people I need to reach out to, tasks I need to accomplish, big ideas to put in the parking lot. This is not where I write articles or sketch out ideas, this is simply to help me keep touch with my current reality.
  7. What books did I read?
This is a major goal for me, but I realized this year in reading 38+ books (my goal was 52, but you know, COVID) that I was taking in too much information, which didn’t leave me bandwidth to create new ideas.
  8. New Goals for 2021
What big new goals do I want to accomplish in 2021? Where do I want to go? Honestly, this is hard for me, but I set out a few modest goals. I also established which quarter I wanted to focus on delivering the goals. This helps me not beat myself up in January for not moving the projects forward fast enough.

Are you ready for your year-end retreat? Reach out on LinkedIn or Facebook and let me know how it goes!
