1. Owners Role #1 - WORKING ON THE BUSINESS. Focus on scenario planning for long term growth and early identification of threats to the business.
2. Owners Role #2 - TRAIN PROBLEM SOLVING & DECISION MAKING. Focus on how direct reports make decisions. What factors they include in the process before deciding and taking action.
3. Owners Role #3 - FORCE PEOPLE TO DO THEIR JOBS. It is easy to allow direct reports to delegate upward and take on their responsibilities. If you are doing their work why are they there?
4. Owners Role #4 - REWARD COLLABORATION & SUPPORT. Hold weekly meetings where you observe what decisions are made and why. Focus who does the most to support their peers in meeting business objectives.
5. Owners Role #5 - COLLEGE BASKETBALL COACH. Your job is to support the development of talent without fear of how long they remain with the company. Your focus is mastery, nothing less is acceptable.
