Introduction

Here we are at the beginning of 2021 and hoping to put 2020 behind us. Unless you were one of the lucky owners who had the right offer at the right time, the majority of entrepreneurs took a big hit last year. It is forecasted that business revenues for 2020 is 1/3 of 2019! How many owners do you know that are already out of business?

This series of shows are not about good news. We are very pessimistic about the immediate future - the next 6 months. That emotion is based on the arbitrary nature of global lockdowns. In fact we address that in our Thursday show: "Beating The Lockdown ...While You Still Have A Future".

Show Objectives

Today's show is focused on analyzing your strengths as an individual, as an owner, and your business. If there is another lockdown or more imposed isolation, you need to rethink the business. What you sell is the end result of the combined competence of you and the business. Instead of starting with the offer and working backwards, we will start at the beginning to alter our offer and put it beyond their control.

Key Issues - Owner Perspective:
  1. What am I (the business) good at?
  2. What upgrade or new business can I create around what we are good at?

What Do I Need To Know
Core Competency is "an area of specialized expertise that is the result of harmonizing complex streams of technology and work activity.  
  1. Structure - every organization, every owner makes decisions about how they want to structure their business. The core issue is your philosophy? Centralize or Decentralize or a Mix? Function Based or Process Based? 
    1. Example: our approach is based on the philosophy that closer to the action decisions are made, the better. So we centralize a few things like processes, sop's, finance to decentralize everything else. Also we believe that processes beats functions - map your processes first then create an organizational chart.
  2. Unique Value – does your core competencies make you (1) unique to the customer in (2) ways that will positively influence their buying decisions?
    1. Example: we are building something unavailable in radio up to now - all programming is demand based. That means customers determine the topics we cover. We tailor our programming to increase its value by understanding the audience's issues.
  3. Hard to Imitate – your uniqueness cannot be fleeting which means it cannot come easily. Your uniqueness is a function of many different factors that are individually unique and therefore collectively almost impossible to imitate.
    1. ​Example: we combine 3 business models; business talk & news radio, a consulting & coaching firm, and a chamber of commerce. We do each as well as the best in their respective industries and when combined beyond any competitor.
  4. Width & Depth  – to dominate a market you need an offer that covers everything relevant to a total solution which requires depth on each item.
    1. Example: radio station/website with notes and a search function; community for engagement to bridge the gap between knowing and doing; an app that provides solutions on demand in the palm of the customer's hand.

Start Here - The Internal View
  1. Review your Vision, Mission, and Values: what does it claim you are good at?
  2. Track record before the Lockdown, track record during the Lockdown: what is the short list of what you have made to work?
  3. What were your competencies, what should it be going forward:
  4. Match competencies to business functions:
  5. Decide and upgrade VMV and functions to support the new business.
