Setting the cultural tone in your business can be the difference between succeeding or failing. Culture is like your “business personality”. It is a blend of why you exist, what you stand for and provides clarity in terms of what is acceptable and what is not, where you are heading. Your culture is a piece of communication, created by people and experienced through people. It is one of the most important management tools you have in your business, you could say it's like DNA.
Building a culture is not an easy undertaking and if not managed well it can create confusion. Why? Because you deal with people and their behaviours. Each culture is unique just like your people. I read somewhere once that culture could be seen like a team sport driven by good people who want to succeed, great analogy.
Who owns the culture? In some businesses there exists the misunderstanding that culture is a HR function or that it is created and run by the management team of a business. In my belief this is false and presents a missed opportunity if this belief exists within a business.
So in this episode we look at some of the ingredients that make up culture, they are not limited to what is listed but creates a starting point into our conversation.
What culture is not... state of the art facilities, random lunches, drinks, yoga, because we see that our workforce might be under pressure. Do not get me wrong, it is useful and can unite people but it is not the thing that defines culture.
This episode is a follow on from my conversation with Matty in episode 2 where we touched on Purpose, Vison, Values and Legacy. Today we take a look at what impact culture has on business, in essence a culture is designed to allow people to do their best work and achieve a common goal.
