“The Visionary Entrepreneur” - Episode 8 – Conflict Resolution Techniques is a gift to your workforce.

IBGR.Network - PROFIT Radio. Everything a business owner needs to start, grow or exit a business. GROW WITH US.

INTRODUCTION

The one area that causes wars, break ups, divorces, breakdown in communication, isolation and dissent in relationships, is the inability for individuals to either step up or step down when it comes to conflict.

So it makes sense that companies battle to address conflict amongst their employees and have to resort to policies, procedures, rules and regulations to govern HOW people ought to behave. And that right there, is why Conflict Resolution techniques are so sought after.

Show Objectives - The Why

How do we address conflict that is unseen, uncalled for and sometimes unheeded in the importance it plays in business relationships? Not an easy question to answer, and yet, there are many ways to approach this topic. One is most definitely deserving attention more than others. The value of understanding all sides to a situation, without judgement.

Key Issues - Owner Perspective:

  • How can I stop my team members from continuously complaining about each other?
  • What techniques are there, to resolve conflict on an accountability level?
  • Who is responsible to stop conflict in the workplace? Is it HR or Management or the individuals with the issues?
  • How do I meditate effectively?

Challenging mindsets is one aspect. Understanding the reality of the situation from the individual's point of view, another. Most people will look at a challenge from their own lens. Their background, upbringing, circumstances, beliefs and cultural expectations lead many to conclusions that are difficult to change if they are set in their ways.

Another area to consider, is title, level, designation, ego, personality type, management style, hierarchy mentality and even gender in most situations that involve conflict. It is never a one size fits all approach.

What You Need to Do - The How

Using the following technique allows you to resolve conflict with anyone, anywhere, anytime, with stunning results…guaranteed.

I realise that understanding one’s self is the greatest gift a person can give to others, knowing that thoughtfulness is the only way people can interact respectfully, from a level of caring and compassion.

Life is about choices. Choices that allow us to engage meaningfully and know that we have the opportunity to grow with others in the same way we wish to interact and be treated.

We can choose to react or respond. This technique is invaluable in showing people how you appreciate them, guide them with something that needs to be addressed in their behaviour and then support them in the change you desire to see in the long term.

  • What I like about you is…
    • Compliment one thing that really stands out for you about the person.
      • Behaviour/the way they communicate/the way they make you feel (positive)/ their thoughtfulness/ caring ways etc…
  • What you can do for me is…
    • Explain one thing that they can adjust in the way they communicate more effectively with you.
      • Guidance in a thoughtful way of how they can improve the way they interact with you/ words that can be removed in conversations with you/ something that will make your professional interaction more impactful/returning calls within a preferred time, answering emails etc…
  • What I can do for you is…
    • Let the person know how you can best support them in the adjustment you asked of them.
      • Gently remind them when they forget what you discussed. Use thoughtful guidance to help them achieve what you both spoke about.

What you need to adjust – The Why!

In the greater picture, to have a welcoming environment where every person takes responsibility for the WAY they speak to people, HOW they project themselves, WHY they behaviour triggers some people and WHAT they can do about it, gives them the opportunity to step up immediately.

To know that we can all guide and support each other, means that we no longer depend on blame shifting, we set our intention to grow together. We may not always like each other, but to focus on solutions and a positive growth mindset encourages Visionary thinking on a very different scale.

My greatest lesson…is that when we lead, we are not responsible for the emotional outbursts of every person in our team. What we are responsible for, is understanding why it happened, what was the trigger and what can we do differently for a better interaction in the future. That to me talks to a Compassionate Leader of Influence who realises that the human experience is a fascinating one. An imperative one. In order for us to succeed together, we need to seek to engage on a deeper emotional level.

In the upcoming episodes, I will share ideas, methodologies and creative solutions that I have been experimenting with and have been using effectively within my own businesses.
