In order to win as a team, everyone needs to be on the same page. Everyone needs to share some of the same core values, now that doesn’t mean everyone will think the exact same. However it does mean that everyone will share some of the same core values. Show Objectives The rule of 5 teaches us the essentials of success:
Key Issue: If teams don’t share the same core values, it can cause team strife. The Law of High Morale – “When you’re winning, nothing hurts!” The Law of Low Morale - When you are losing everything hurts! What You Need to Do Teams don’t win by accident! If you win, you do it on purpose. Core Values of Winning Teams Core Value #1 – A __commitment__ that inspires results. 1. A Commitment to a __common __ ____vision__. The team “buys into” the vision, when they: a. ____understand____ it. b. ____contribute___ to it. c. __own_____ it. d. ___pass__ it on. 2. A Commitment to ___Loyalty__ Loyalty must be earned but not fought for. Blind loyalty leads to ___defeat____. Core Value #2 – A ___contribution____ that makes a difference. “When you’re interested in something, you do it only when it’s convenient. When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results.” –Ken Blanchard Core Value #3 – A _compentency____ level that raises the standards. Winning teams have competent players. Contribution deals with ___our effort______. Competency deals with ___our ability_____. The weak link (player) affects the team three ways: a. Loss of __opportunity__. b. Loss of __morale__. c. Loss of __productivity__. Core Value #4 --___Communication___ that increases the effectiveness of the team. “If one had to name a single – all purpose instrument of leadership, it would be communication.” –John W. Gardner Five areas of communications that help your team operate at their maximum potential: 1. Communication that is ___candid____. 2. Communication that is __direct_____. 3. Communication that is ___rapid____. 4. Communication that is _inclusive______. 5. Communication that is __consistent___. Core Value #5 - __Cooperation___ that creates harmony on the team. “All your strength is in union. All your danger is in discord.” –Henry Wadsworth Longfellow 1. Cooperation requires __trust___. 2. Cooperation requires __respect____. 3. Cooperation requires an _other___ - ___oriented__ point of view. Core Value #6 – A __chemistry__ that enhances personal connection.
Core Value # 7 – A _creativity__ that enlarges the team’s potential. “Creativity is to see what everybody else has seen & to think what nobody else has thought.” –Albert Szent-Gyorgyi 4 I’s Are Greater Than 2 Eyes (Thinking for a Living by Joey Ryman) 1. __Investigation___ 2. __Incubation_____ 3. __Illumination____ 4. __Illustration_____ Core Value # 8 – A system of ___conflict___ ___management___ that reduces stress & tension rapidly. Eight basic keys to conflict resolution (RoadMap): 1. Speak the truth in love 2. Seek to understand the other’s point of view 3. Seek common ground 4. Make expectations clear 5. Stay focused on the issue at hand 6. Maintain direct communication, no third parties. 7. Listen and don’t respond defensively 8. Make a commitment to the organization’s best interest. A receptivity toward change that stimulates growth. Growth equals change. If the sta and company are growing, change, like conflict, is inevitable. Core Value # 9 – A __cohesive__ team that is responsive to __change____ Core Value # 10 – Winning teams have a sense of __community____. There’s a big difference between _unity____ and community.
