Introduction
Why do you want to empower people?  
My reply, I must confess, the reason I want to do it is a selfish reason and that reason is because I want to do something else more important so I delegate.  Now, that is not the correct reason, but I’m sure you have done that or heard of someone doing that. CORRECT?

Let me challenge your thinking though.  The real reason to empower others is to benefit them, to help them focus and develop their potential.  Because as leaders, we should always be in the people development business. 

Show Objectives - The Why
Are you tired of giving people something, then at best they do it poorly or don’t do it at all?  When we change how we do it, it increases the success pattern because they feel empowered. 

My objective today is to help entrepreneurs understand the value and the power of developing others.  And to help the entrepreneur better understand the impact this can and will have on the organization. 

Key Issues
We are not developing people the way we should.  Most of the time as a leader, we just delegate tasks we don’t want to do instead of developing talent for creativity and innovation. 


What You Need to Do - The What
You need to implement a stakeholder development strategy for your organization. 

6 Steps to Developing Others 
  1. Ask questions often.
    • If you want to help them develop you should ask more questions vs giving instructions. 
    • Your future leaders need to know that a great discussion is the precursor to a great decision. 
 
  1. Listen closely. 
    • People feel valued when they feel heard. 
    • It was once said, “Being heard is so close to being loved that for the average person they are almost indistinguishable.”
 
  1. Identify Patterns

To Identify patterns: (If you really want to empower someone):
    • Identify how people learn
    • Identify how people accept responsibility 
    • Identify how people want to be held accountable 
    • Use DISC assessments to Identify people
 
  1. Challenge peoples’ thinking

​Challenge them with these type questions:
    • What if?
    • Imagine?
    • Could We?
 
  1. Encourage a focus on solutions
    • I learned early that most good leaders don’t like challenges without a solution. 
    • Challenge your team to always have 2-3 solutions when they want to bring a challenge forward. 
There are 4 types of people: 
    • Troubleshooters
    • Target Solutions People
    • Problem solvers
    • Opportunity Specialist
 
  1. Model the Importance of Reflection
    • One of the most important things a leader can do is to take time to think.

3 Questions To Model in Reflection 
    1. What did you learn?
    2. How does it apply?
    3. When can you implement it?

Final Thought
Theodore Roosevelt quote:  The best executive is one who has sense enough to pick good people to do what he wants done and self restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.
