Last week we saw yet another international ransomware attack which started with an IT firm in Florida. The demand by the Russian hackers REvil was $70 million in cryptocurrency.
These continued attacks should have all of us worried. In addition to the IT Firm Kaseya over 800 businesses were also affected, many of them small and medium sized businesses in several different countries.
The hackers infected Kaseya’s network-management software to spread their ransomware through cloud-service providers.
I say we should be worried because all of us who have businesses must subscribe to at least some cloud services and are therefore vulnerable. The governments of the world need to band together to figure out a way to stop these kinds of threats. This could quickly become the number one risk we all face. One attack could put most businesses out of business.
Cyber security is something every business owner should take seriously. On December 15th of last year, I did an interview with local business attorney, Tricia Dunlap. Tricia has done a lot of research into cyber security and has become something of an expert in the field. Much of our conversation had to do with this subject mostly when it comes to liability. But your cybersecurity policies should be extensive to cover everything. You can listen to the podcast at https://pod.co/future-financial-confidence-with-ellen-mcilhenny, episodes 37-40 of season 3.
