Episode B.011 Creating A Training Manual

The following is an approach we used for years designing training programs in the hard and soft skills. This is not about the Manual you create, it is a process for determining the gap between a specific employee's ability and job requirements. Use this process and the Training Manual will be more a collection of other documentation and a sequence for moving to skill mastery.

Analysis
  • Business Needs - business issues the training is to solve;
  • Learner - what knowledge and performance level can be assumed for the participants, don't train everything just want is needed now;
  • Content - materials used for the training, usually a collection of documents sequenced with you creating the linkages;
  • Objectives - what must be achieved during the training.
Design & Development
  • Measurement - how are you going to measure success in the training and on the job;
  • Instruction Plan - is this a phased approach or one time, build from simple to complex, information in small chunks with practice;
  • Choosing Media - online, video, audio, written materials - don't make anything that currently exists;
  • Testing - roll it out or do a beta test before roll out.
Training
  • Organize the Experience - session objectives and measurement during the training and on the job;
  • Elaborate on the Key Issues - cover the least amount of knowledge possible - this is not college;
  • Rehearse the Learning - have the participants do it what has been learned before adding more information;
  • Innovate - back on the job practical factors to certify transference from training to work.
Tracking
  • Create a training Calendar - given the participants role creating a sequence of sessions and topics;
  • Track training and job performance - used for legal purposes and creating skill mastery throughout the company.
