Stages of Development

Episode B.034 UX Website Design Tips

26/6/2020

1 Comment

Introduction
This week we are concluding the emphasis on reopening fast and hard from the forced pandemic shutdown. The shows will cover how to generate revenue either directly or building the supportive infrastructure necessary. Next month (July 2020) we are shifting to building the best organization possible - the Agile Company.

Show Objectives
This is my weekly "out-of-the-box" Show. Since we are a startup and building it in front of you, the following is an area we just dived into the deep end of the pool. Although we are not a website company, over the years we have built all of our sites during the early stages of growth. We only outsourced it when we could afford that expense. Today is no different.

I have been intrigued by this design philosophy for a number of years. It has been used in writing computer code, a method of project management called agile, that we have used as a consulting operation.

Thanx to the Interaction Design Foundation for their contribution to my education and your show notes.

Applied to website design it is called UX or User Experience Based Design and I believe it is a no brainer for defining how visitors need to interact with your website. Have Fun.

What You Need to Know
Look
  • Effectiveness: users ability to achieve their goals;
  • Efficiency: how fast can the user achieve their goals;
  • Engagingness: pleasing experience;
  • Error Terror: visitors can easily respond from mistakes;
  • Ease of Learning: easy to learn = reuse.

Feel
  • Words: meaningful and simple to understand;
  • Visual Representations: icons, images representation of ideas;
  • Physical Space: where are they using it and how;
  • Time: measure user progress;
  • Behavior: how visitors interact with the site.

Usability
  • Utility: useful and meets the needs of the user;
  • Desirability: is there cache from using or owning;
  • Brand Experience: feel good about the company providing the product & service.

What You Need to Do
  1. Emphasize: understand what the visitor is looking for and what type of experience will make them return.
  2. Define: bring the visitors needs and wants into the site design by defining it into requirements and specifications.
  3. Ideate: think outside normal boundaries where everything is possible, don't comprise.
  4. Prototype: bring reality into the picture by building your 1.0 version and msake the right compromises.
  5. Test: make the site available (2.0 version) as a soft launch, gain user interaction to feed back into the process.

Your Checklist - Useful + Usable + Findable + Credible + Desirable + Accessible = Valuable
