Introduction
My friend and mentor, Dr. John C. Maxwell, states, “leadership is influence, nothing more nothing less”. I want to stress one more aspect. Dr. Maxwell also states that, “everything rises and falls on leadership” and “leadership rises and falls on communication”. We have discussed communication during previous episodes. If you have not listened, go to the podcasts and listen to tips on effective communication.

​A leader must know understand his or her dominant leadership, which was discussed in a previous show. Leadership styles vary and the selected style for any given situation can make or break a team and organization. Some of the most used leadership styles are transformational, servant, charismatic, autocratic, and transactional. When leadership fails to communicate in the language of the employees, misunderstanding and frustration may surface.

Show Objectives – The Why
The objective during this show is for leadership to understand the importance of treating people as individuals. The team concept is a crucial part of an organization; however, each team includes individuals. The show will go deep into how to create and maintain a cohesive team while ensuring everyone is treated as an individual. There will be discussion on the law of the bad apple and law of the weakest link. How can you THRIVE in treating your employees as individuals? You have integrity, treat them with kindness and compassion, connect with them, practice motivation, ensure delivery is constructed with passion, and by investing in excellence.

Key Issues – Owner Perspective

1. Leaders are not able to treat team members as individuals.
2. Leaders are not aware of the impact their behavior has on influence.
3. Connection and relationship building are missing in the organization.
4. Coaching and mentoring programs are non-existent or not effective.
5. Employee development is based on team versus individual performance. 

What You Need to Know – The What

1. There are different leadership styles and approaches.
2. When leaders speak the language of everyone, the dynamics of the organization elevates.
3. Each employee desires to be treated as an individual.
4. Employees are the most valuable resource in organizations.
5. Employees must feel a sense of ownership to tasks.
6. Teamwork makes the dream work, but individuals make the team.
7. Treating employees as an individual gives your better insight.
8. Customers will be treated better when employees feel valued.
9. Leaders will be able to keep employees and scale better by treating employees as an individual.

What You Need to Do – The How

1. Conduct research or attend training to learn your individual leadership style.
2. Take a behavioral assessment to determine the dominant communication style and how to interact with employees. This will advise how to speak to each person in their style.
3. Create and implement an effective mentorship and coaching program in the organization. This program should be for workers, supervisors, managers, and senior leadership.
4. Provide opportunities for development at all levels.
5. Conduct town halls to ensure employees have a venue to address concerns and mistreatments.
6. Ensure performance reviews are based on individual work with primary duties. This means to not simply state that an employee “assists” someone else.
7. Provide the ability for employees to grow with the company.
