“Succession is one of the key responsibilities of leadership.” - Max Dupree

Key Issues
Owner Perspective:
  1. advertize high visibility & mission critical opportunities,
  2. people hungry for recognition and advancement - who are they?
  3. harness the energy necessary to grow the company
Employee Perspective:
  1. chance to gain visibility and be heard,
  2. make my own future

What You Need to Do
I. There are plenty of misconceptions and myths that people embrace about leaders and leadership. Here are five common ones:
Five Myths About Leadership
  1. The Management Myth — that leading and managing are the same thing. They aren’t.
  2. The Entrepreneur Myth — Frequently, people assume that all salespeople and entrepreneurs are leaders. But that’s not always the case.
  3. The Knowledge Myth — Sir Francis Bacon said, “Knowledge is power.”  But that isn’t necessarily true.
  4. The Pioneer Myth — Anyone out in front of the crowd is a leader. Being first isn’t the same as leading.
  5. The Position Myth — The greatest misunderstanding about leadership is that people think it is based on position, but it’s not.

II. The 5 Levels of Leadership
1. Position (Rights) – People follow because they have to.
2. Permission (Relationship) – People follow because they want to.
3. Production (Results) – People follow because of what you have done for the organization.
4. People Development (Reproduction) – People follow because of what you have done for them.
5. Personhood (Respect) – People follow because of who you are and what you represent.

III. HOW TO EMPOWER OTHERS TO THEIR POTENTIAL

1. Evaluate Them
If you give inexperienced people too much authority too soon, you can set them up to fail.
When evaluating people you wish to empower, look at these areas:
    • Knowledge
    • Skill
    • Desire

2. Model For Them
Model the attitude and work ethic you would like them to embrace.

3. Give Them Permission To Succeed
As a leader and influencer, you may believe that everyone wants to be successful and automatically strives for success, probably as you have.

4. Transfer Authority To Them
Empowering others is more than sharing your workload.

5. Publicly Show Your Confidence In Them
You need to do it publicly.

6. Supply Them With Feedback
Although you need to publicly praise your people, you can’t let them go very long without giving them honest, positive feedback.

7. Release Them To Continue On Their Own
No matter who you are working to empower—your employees, children, colleagues, or spouse—your ultimate aim should be to release them to make good decisions and succeed on their own.

IV.  How Can I Make My Leadership Last?
Law of Legacy: A leader’s lasting value is measured by succession.

4 disciplines to develop your leadership and legacy:
  • Know the legacy you want to leave.
  • Live the legacy you want to leave.
  • Choose who will carry on your legacy.
  • Make sure you pass the baton.

“Succession is one of the key responsibilities of leadership.” - Max Dupree
