INTRODUCTION -
On the show last week, I talked about getting clear about the mission -- your why? Your why is the fuel for why you started and sustains your business. I referenced last week that you can and should revisit the mission to trigger the same level of excitement that comes with the possibilities and hopefulness that comes with a New Year. 

Today’s show is an extension of leveraging the mission with a deeper focus on how to get the team on board. How do you get them fired up to take on the challenges, and strive to exceed expectations.

Show Objectives - The Why 

The objectives of today’s show are: 
  • Aligning the team with the why
  • Attracting talent
  • Designing culture

Key Issues - Owner Perspective:

I speak with a lot of business owners regarding attracting and retaining good help. It is a challenge. Many owners of small service based companies, especially those with specific niches, say that the most difficult challenge they have in scaling their business is finding people that have the same level of passion, care and concern to consistently deliver brand value and treat clients the way that you would. That is why it is important to find people that are not only skilled and capable, but are as deeply committed to the company mission as you.

You want high performing leaders and teams. You want and need people that can solve complex problems, who are innovative thinkers. 

What You Need to Know - The What
  • WIIFM (What’s in it for me?) - This is the most important question that you can answer for people. However, the response can’t just be about their best interest. It must be connected to your mission. Yes, your job is to connect their desires to your mission. Create a win-win scenario. 
  • Values Driven - Having a powerful social mission that speaks to a higher purpose and true motivating values of the company can be a very strong magnet for top talent. It offers the chance to be part of a mission bigger than just profit and sales, and shows that the people in the company are a community joined by a common purpose. Ensuring your recruiting process is robust enough to truly determine that people are a good fit. 
  • Leadership & Culture must mirror the values you say are important. Recently, The Ellen DeGeneres Show experienced a scandal that could have taken the organization and her personal brand down to its knees. While they took a direct hit, the values that she has embodied personally and outwardly on the show was their saving grace. 
  • Say it Loud - Your company values should be visible in everything that you do: social responsibility, marketing and branding, recruiting, day-to-day operations, major decisions, etc.
  • Develop them to keep them - It is not enough to attract them, you must keep them.
