Introduction

Many entrepreneurs and business owners have found that as their business grows, they are mired in the small details.  None of these things are taxing, difficult to accomplish or overwhelming.  Yet, they nip, nip, nip at our time.  Before we know it, we have spent hours checking off these small things and the day has gotten away from us.  Are these some areas or needs that someone else could do to free us up for the ‘big rocks’?  Would these things allow us to transition from working in our business to working on our business?  What are some other key questions that need to be considered in this thinking?

Today’s episode of “The People Side of Business” with host Angela Hooper-Menifield will tackle a subject many managers and business owners struggle with - Giving Constructive Feedback.

What You Need to Know

  1. What is feedback?
    1. information about reactions to a product, a person's performance of a task, etc. which is used as a basis for improvement.
    2. The term ‘feedback’ is used to describe the helpful information or criticism about prior action or behavior from an individual, communicated to another individual (or a group) who can use that information to adjust and improve current and future actions and behaviors.
  2. Five reasons why feedback is important?
    1. Feedback is always there
    2. Feedback is effective listening
    3. Feedback can motivate
    4. Feedback can improve performance
    5. Feedback is a tool for continued learning
  3. What are the three (3) types of feedback?
    1. Appreciation (thanks)
    2. Coaching (here’s a better way to do it)
    3. Evaluation (here’s where you stand)
  4. The difference between feedback and criticism.
    1. Criticism is focused on what we don't want; feedback is focused on what we want. ... Criticism is focused on the past; feedback is focused on the future.

​What You Need to Do
  1. Be in constant communication and seek ways to give all types of feedback
  2. Model effective listening when feedback is given to you
  3. Validate feedback (does not mean you agree)
  4. Create formal and informal feedback mechanisms for your business
    1. Customers
    2. Employees
    3. Stakeholders
  5. Give Feedback
    1. Check your motives
    2. Be Timely
    3. Make it Regular
    4. Prepare your comments
    5. Be Specific
    6. Criticize in private
    7. Use “I” statements
    8. Limit Your Focus
    9. Talk about Positives Too (Sandwich Approach)
    10. Provide Specific Suggestions
