Stages of Development

Episode D.032 Leadership vs. Likership in Times of Change

Show Objectives
Pleasing people is not the same as leading people. There is a fine line between Leadership and Likership. Even though our goal is to add value to the people we lead, not everyone you lead will be happy with the decisions you make while leading. That is okay! You can never make everyone happy. Wanting to make everyone happy will set you up for disappointment or failure. The real goal of leadership is to get the best out of your teams by asking for the best from the people in them.

How to navigate the Leadership/Likership Path
  1. Change your expectations towards leadership by asking three questions: What is best for the organization? What is best for other people within the organization? What is best for me?
  2. Value the people in your organization as much as you value yourself
  3. Establish expectations up front

Be a Team Player
All leaders are in the people business. The key to successfully working with people is to value them and add value to them. Grow your organization by growing your people. These guidelines will help you grow your people while growing your business:
  1. Value your people
  2. Emphasize personal growth - You need to grow you and your people
  3. Be prepared to change

Believe that Change is Essential
  1. Time is your most precious commodity - Set a culture that people need to earn your time
  2. Always take responsibility
  3. Have the tough conversations: Ask yourself the hard questions before having any tough conversation and then do it right

Taking your Teams through the Change Process
Good leadership always challenges people to rise up to become their best and achieve more. Some people accept the challenge and others don’t. Work with the willing.
  1. Apply the 25-50-25 Principle: Typically, 25% will support your efforts, 50% will be undecided and 25% will resist change.
  2. Balance care with candor
