Lisa Askwith - "Engaging Your People for Success"

IBGR.Network - PROFIT Radio.
Everything a business owner needs to start, grow or exit a business.GROW WITH US.

Introduction
You have a dream. You’re sitting on an idea that you can turn into a
great entrepreneurial journey. What if you knew how to develop and
grow a sustainable business - fast, even in today’s (post) pandemic economy?

That is exactly what we will be sharing in the Season 3 programming here on the IBGR Network. Proven strategies delivered by seasoned business owners, sharing what works and what doesn’t work at each of the six stages of business growth.

From concept, through startup, to maturity and even through to how to exit your successful business. Whatever stage you’re at in your business, this is the place to learn and grow – and to pick up tips on how to do what you do – better!

People are the powerhouse behind everything, they are an intrinsic part of your business, and your everyday life. If you can't engage and work with them in a mutually beneficial style then everything suffers.

I passionately believe in not only ensuring your people are engaged, but in putting people at the centre of the work equation. Whilst the business, or product, or service, is still vitally important, it is the people that will ultimately make or break your company's success.

Many Business owners forget this, and get too heavily involved in metrics, ignoring the empathetic leadership that is needed to build a successful company culture. Culture is king especially now that the new generation of workers want to feel connected, valued and able to make a difference in their organisations…...or they move quickly.

In today’s show I will take you through the 11 topics we will discuss in Season 3, Stage 5 People. I will give you a variety of key pointers to focus on, and tips that you can apply to your business from all of the topics. Enjoy a fast paced download of information that will help your business in all things People……….and make sure you have booked in the time to listen to the topics that are particularly relevant for you.

Show Objectives - The Why

People are the powerhouse behind your business success…...or the toxicity behind its failure and decreasing revenue. As a business owner it is your job to ensure that you have systems, processes and strategies in place to ensure it is the first of these two options. Today's show will give you a smorgasbord of ideas, tips and tricks that you can use.

Key OwnerShip Issues;

People are your biggest asset in business. Take time to compare your people costs, training, recruitment, salary, health care, sick leave etc. to your other overheads. It will show you just why you need to be serious about investing in your People and making sure they are fully engaged and giving your business everything it needs to succeed. Each topic in this series holds strategies for capitalising on your People and developing not just a successful company, but a business both you and your People can be proud of, and enjoy working for!

What You Need to Know - The What- Segment 2

The first step to being able to fully engage your people and develop the best outcomes for them and your business is to get your recruitment practices right. It might sound simple, but many businesses overlook this, or think they don't have time for it…..and it always leads to disaster. Make the time, you need to, especially as this links to the biggest element in any business: your culture, without the right people you will never achieve the culture you need to really drive your business to sustained success.

As recruitment is a key preventive measure there is a standard process chart I would recommend you develop for your business. The key steps for this are;

Recruitment:
  • Agreement on role characteristics against KPI’s/team fit/JD
  • Development of short list criteria
  • Division of tasks- HR vs recruiting manager
  • Advertising- sign off requirements and authorisation
  • Candidate selection- short list
  • Phone interviews
  • Face to face interviews
  • Offer
  • On boarding- must have a full probation length induction program run by the Manager
  • Probation review

All of these points work together to help you start your business by hiring the people you actually need for your culture and vision.

So, being a good corporate citizen, something for you to think about as you assess your company moving forward is;

Work gets done through people, and highly engaged employees result in lower turnover, higher morale, increased productivity and enhanced business results. This is what you want to achieve. Getting your recruitment right is the first piece of the puzzle.

Our entire season focuses on giving you the tools to achieve this level of engagement, through each of our topics.

What You Need to Do - The How- Segment 3

Some key tips and needs for all areas of People in your business

A couple of key tips to remember before we start Season 3 next week and really deep dive into Engaging your People;

  • Always document everything that requires an outcome or action
  • Robust recruitment processes hand in hand with detailed inductions are critical
  • Up to date, fair and consistent JD’s, Contracts and KPI’s are not optional
  • Consistent and Fair performance appraisals
  • Career laddering and training need to be available and transparent
  • Access and encouragement to focus on continuous improvement
  • Trusted and capable leadership team who provide mentoring
  • A clear and actionable probation process
  • Engaged and culture driven leaders to monitor and apply all of the above
  • And don’t forget the value of good documentation!!!!!!

All of these points work together to enable your business to perform to the highest level, fully engage your staff, and encourage them to stay, achieve, and innovate for your success and theirs.
