Show Objectives Do you want to be successful? There are many different, important aspects of being a well-rounded, successful business owner. Today’s show will explore People Skills for Success…and we will really explore the value of Influence. By the end of our time together today you will... Hopefully you will have a better understanding of the power and value of influence and how you can use your influence to be more successful in your life and business. Key Issues 1. People skills are one of the most underappreciated areas of business development. 2. People skills or Soft skills can be taught, but they're not as straightforward as hard skills 3. You need hard skills to run your business, but you need people skills (soft skills) to grow it. My friend and mentor John Maxwell says this about influence: “Leadership is influence, nothing more nothing less” What is the importance of influence? Your ability to influence others can empower people development, accelerate results and ultimately ensure an easier working environment. Influencing is about understanding yourself and the effect or impact you have on others. “True leadership cannot be awarded, appointed, or assigned. It comes only from influence, and that cannot be mandated. It must be earned. The only thing a title can buy is a little time-either to increase your level of influence with others or to undermine it.” Leadership is influence. Just because someone has a title, doesn’t mean that person is a leader. “When it comes to identifying a real leader… The proof of leadership is found in the followers.” An organization is only as great as its people. With many myths about leadership, people tend to fall into the trap of managing their team without influencing them. They become complacent with getting the job done, rather than growing the company and the people involved. To succeed, we must stand as leaders in our organizations, regardless of position, and influence the influencers. There are several factors that can attribute to emerging as a leader. Here, we’ll talk about the seven factors highlighted in John Maxwell’s hugely successful leadership book, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership:
The Law of Influence: “The true measure of leadership is influence. Nothing more. Nothing less”. “Everything rises and falls on leadership." Both great quotes by John C. Maxwell, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership Everything rises and falls on influence. Think about it. Who will earn more over a lifetime? Someone with more or less influence? Who will get the promotion or the new job? The person with the most influence or someone else? Who will have better relationships professionally and personally? Someone with more or less influence? The last time you were sad, mad, upset, frustrated, irritated, etc. was it because you had too much influence or not enough? There are four main types of influence. The types of influence include: 1. Negative, 2. neutral, 3. positive, and 4. life changing I will briefly talk into all 4 of these. Questions: Which type of influence are you cultivating in your leadership? What can you do today to create positive and life changing influence in the lives of those you lead? Your ability to influence others can empower people development, accelerate results and ultimately ensure an easier working environment. Influencing is about understanding yourself and the effect or impact you have on others. As a Values Based Leadership Specialist we have access to many values in a hugely impactful process which changes every person who actively engages in it….a bold statement indeed but there is overwhelming evidence that these basic human values…the awareness of these values, shapes our character and therefor influences our behaviour….and ultimately our success. In our last session of the day, I discuss the value of Influence, its benefits, characteristics, AND some steps to follow to grow your influence as the real understanding and improvement do not just come from knowledge but applied knowledge. (and even more so when you evaluate what you apply every single day!) The Value of Influence Whether you consider yourself to be a leader or not, you are leading people every day. Many people accept the traditional definition of a leader as someone with a title. The truth, however, is that leadership is influence. Influence is simply the capacity to have an effect on the words, choices, behaviour, development, or character of someone else. Therefore, through our natural interactions with others, we have the capacity to influence the people around us on a daily basis. Final thought: They still haven’t found what the human brain is capable of so why do most of us live with self limiting beliefs? Why do so many of us think we can’t do certain things? Why do so many of us already defeat ourselves before we even start something? Your goals, your aspirations, your destiny …it’s all waiting for you with open arms.
