Your Business Podcast Show Notes Goldmine
Welcome to the world of Business Podcasting! I am your host, Donna Kunde and I am going to be pulling back the curtain and sharing all of my podcasting secrets. What kind of secrets do I have? Well, imagine this. Many Podcasters don’t consider show notes to be an important part of publishing new episodes. It’s easy to see why – podcasts are meant to be heard… not seen. That said, are there any benefits to spending time creating written content? Let's explore the possibilities and we will let you be the judge!
Picture
E9 The Ins & Outs of Podcast Show Notes |IBGR | Donna Kunde
  1. Show notes help reinforce an episode’s message by complementing the audio content with imagery and articles, creating an in-depth look at a topic that can be consumed both audibly and visually. Let’s explore the Ins and Outs of Podcast Show Notes!
  2. Their main benefits include:
  • Central location for listeners to access materials referenced during an episode
  • Persuade casual listeners to tune in to new and old episodes
  • Attract and educate new listeners about the podcast
  • In order to persuade casual listeners to tune into the latest episodes, use show notes to highlight main takeaways and why this episode should not be missed. Some people need a little extra convincing to hit play and show notes are the perfect opportunity to get them there.
  • While podcast show notes do take a little time to put together, you’ll be surprised at how much of the work you’re already doing when you prepare for your episodes!
  • Show Notes vs Show Summary
  • Show notes are an in-depth written account of what happened during an episode and additional resources that take the content one step further. The additional resources include links to articles mentioned during an episode, guest bios and social channels, videos, and relevant calls-to-action.
  • Episode summary is one paragraph that details only a few high-level points. The summary is a gist, while show notes are more comprehensive.
    3. How to use Show Notes and Summaries
    4. Summaries are attached to each episode and appear within most podcast listening apps. Within Spotify, users can click on each episode’s title to reveal the summary. Some podcasts summarize their episodes in 2-3 sentences with a brief call-to-action on how to get in touch with the hosts.
5.Episode show notes include the same summary but also have additional links to external resources that were mentioned throughout the episode. Some podcast listening apps restrict hyperlinks within the episode description field. This means it’s not possible to link listeners to these articles directly from the app. Instead, compiling everything into a blog post is the best way to help an audience member access the information later on.

E10 Business Podcast Show Notes Key Components |IBGR | Donna Kunde
  1. In episode 9 we discovered the Ins & Outs of Podcast Show Notes. In this episode, let’s explore key components to include in your show notes so you can monetize and maximize later on.
  2. In order to persuade casual listeners to tune into the latest episodes, use show notes to highlight main takeaways and why this episode should not be missed. Some people need a little extra convincing to hit play and show notes are the perfect opportunity to get them there.
  3. As you record each episode, provide the URL to the show notes for one central location to every additional resource.
  4. The IBGR Template - Where Transformation Happens!
    • Title - Write what your ideal listener would put in a search on Google/Bing/etc about this topic (max 100 characters)
    • The Hook - Quote, Story, Statistic, joke/humor Comprehensive show notes should include at least one memorable episode quote. It could be the main takeaway, a controversial guest statement, or a funny host remark that entices users to take the next step and listen to the episode. Podcast listeners like to discover new shows through trusted friends or online communities, so make it easy for your loyal audience members to share these memorable moments.
    • The Why - Objective The Why
    • The What - What you need to know
    • The How - What you need to do
    • BIO: Include contact information
    • CTA: Include a Call To Action. Throughout the lifetime of a podcast, there are multiple actions hosts want their audience to take. Subscribe, leave a review, sign up for a newsletter, or become a Patreon member, for example. Similar to including links to external resources in one place, including a section of calls-to-actions within show notes makes sure listeners don’t need to remember multiple URLs to take the next step. Now all you have to do is direct them to your show notes page and they can easily navigate to your Patreon page.
    • TAGS: Get your podcast found with a strategic use of tags.
  5. A quick Summary - Start your show notes with a brief summary of the episode. Your goal here is to convince the reader to hit that play button. Hook them with a story, a provocative statement, a thought-provoking question. Don’t be afraid to create suspense or debunk conventional wisdom. Keep it under 100 words. What should you say? Use benefits-based language that explains what the reader will get by listening to the full show. How will their lives be better after they hear it? Include your hardest-hitting points of data and quotes.

E11 Podcast Show Notes Reuse & Repurpose (Blogs, Emails & Websites) |IBGR | Donna Kunde
  1. When you write show notes for each episode they can be repurposed in a host of different ways. You do the work once and then reuse and repurpose the content to continually draw in new listeners to your podcast. Create your show notes and podcasts to be “evergreen” and the content never expires!
  2. The most obvious use of your show notes is to create a blog post out of them. You can hyperlink to the episode and invite readers to hear a more in-depth explanation of your topic. Consider having a page on your website for your podcasts and a separate page for your show notes. This allows potential clients to find your two different ways.
  3. Show notes also offer the opportunity to re-promote older episodes. Most podcasts are centered around a specific topic so referencing previously published episodes is bound to happen. Including a link to past content helps both current and new listeners to consume your back catalog, likely creating more loyal audience members.
  4. Reach out to other bloggers and offer your notes as a guest blog on their site. When researching a guest or topic, you likely found and referenced a few relevant articles, videos, or other podcasts within the episode. Reach out to let them know you are promoting their content and ask if they are interested in doing the same. You could offer to interview them on a future podcast in exchange for their promotion of your episode and blog post.
  5. Finally, every episode and blog post (show notes) can be sent to your email list as valuable content!
  6. Remember, do the work once and then reuse and repurpose. You may have to make some slight edits to fit with the medium you are choosing to market on, but basically all of the heavy is done early on.

E12 Podcast Show Notes Reuse & Repurpose (Social Media) |IBGR | Donna Kunde
  1. In this episode we will explore how we reuse and repurpose show notes on social media in order to reach new listeners and have a greater impact.
  2. If you remember back in episode 5, we uncovered the Hero’s Journey in your podcast. You were encouraged to map out your entire season to take the listener on a journey of transformation. Now it is time to use your roadmap to map out a social media strategy.
  3. At IBGR, we believe it is important to record a year’s worth of content in 13 weeks using our formula to create four episodes per week. Stay in creative mode for 13 weeks to produce your content and then switch your focus to marketing your show.
  4.  LinkedIn Newsletter - Still rather new on the scene are the Linked In Newsletters. Reach a whole new audience when you use your show notes to create your own Linked In newsletter and never worry about running out of content. Every time you post a newsletter, subscribers get an email notification of your new content. You can add relevant and current calls to action as well.
  5. Social Media Posts - you mapped out a transformative listener journey. Now post snippets with a link to listen and subscribe
  6. Audiograms - By marketing just a snippet of your podcast show with the rest of the world, you make your podcasts more shareable than ever. Promoting your podcasts only with audio posts may not generate much engagement. Instead, combine an audio snippet with an image/video, a waveform, and captions, and you’ll have the perfect audio nugget you need to woo your listeners. You can even turn your entire podcast into an audiogram and post it automatically to your YouTube channel!
  7. Use quotes to create memes - In episode 10 we shared the IBGR Show Notes Template and suggested you start each episode with a some kind of hook in the form of a quote, story or statistic. Now you take that hook and turn it into a branded and shareable meme! There are plenty of platforms like Canva these days to use if you are not a graphic artist.
  8. If you are posting your show notes on your website as a blog post, share that entire post on social media using the direct link to the post on your website.
