How to Tell the Difference Between a Coach & a Mentor

1. Personal growth without the benefit of personal mentors can only take you so far. If you want to be the business owner who has the success of your dreams, doing it alone can only take you so far. At some point we all need a mentor. But how do you know who to follow? 

 

1. Objectives - The WHY

Most people who decide to grow personally find their first mentors in the pages of books. It is important to know when to transition to real life mentors at some point. In today’s episode we will explore how to identify a good mentor when you see one. 

1. What You Need to Know - The WHAT

1. A good mentor is a worthy example
2. A good mentor is available
3. A good mentor has proven experience
4. A good mentor possesses wisdom
5. A good mentor provides friendship and support
6. A good mentor is a coach who makes a difference in people’s lives

Good Coaches share five common characteristics. 

They…

• Care for the people they coach
• Observe their Attitudes, Behavior and Performance
• Align them with their struggles for Peak Performance
• Communicate and give feedback about their Performance
• Help them to improve their Lives and Performance

5. What You Need to Do​​ - The HOW

1. Find a next-step mentor beyond book mentors
2. Make two lists. 
   1. One with the specific skills or strengths you want to improve to reach your potential. 
   2. On the second list put the specific problem areas where you feel the need for ongoing guidance.
3. If you are just starting, look for worthy models to follow by reading about them in books.
4. Then look for people who will give you access to their lives
5. A word of caution...sometimes people look good from far away but when you get to know them you discover qualities you don’t admire. If that happens, don’t get discouraged. There are plenty of respected mentors to follow.

Segment 2 - The Law of Expansion

How to Expand Into Your Full Potential

1. “The potential that exists within us is limitless and largely untapped...when you think of limits, you create them.” - Robert J. Kriegel and Louis Patler
2. The tree in the forest never tells itself “I’ve grown enough, I think I’ll stop now.”
3. Objective - The Why

Most experts believe people typically use only 10% of their true potential. If that is true, and it is, then the average person has a huge capacity for improvement and expansion. 

1. What you need to know - The What

 

1. In order to increase our Thinking Capacity we need to adjust our thinking. 
   1. Stop thinking “more work” and start thinking “what works”
   2. Stop thinking “can I?” and start thinking “HOW can I?’
   3. Stop thinking “one door” and start thinking “many doors”
2. In order to increase our Action Capacity we need to do the right things at the right times. 
   1. Stop doing only what you have done before and start doing things you could and should do. 
   2. Stop doing what is expected and start doing more than is expected
   3. Stop doing important things occasionally and start doing things daily

 

1. What you need to do - The How
   1. Test yourself to see if you have made the mental transition for “I can’t” to “how can I” by asking yourself the following questions:
      1. If I knew I could not fail, what would I attempt?
      2. If I had no limitations what would I like to do?
      3. If finances were not an issue what would I be doing with my life?
   2. Give yourself an effectiveness audit so you are thinking “what works” instead of “more work.”
   3. Create a plan and system to make sure you are doing what is important daily.

Segment 3 - The Law of Contribution

When you're gone will anyone remember your name?

1. If you’re not doing something with your life, it doesn’t matter how long it is!
2. Be a river, no a reservoir
   1. Be grateful

   5. Define success as sowing, not reaping
   6. Focus on Self Development, not Self Fulfillment
   7. Keep Growing to Keep Giving
