How to Get Noticed in the World of Business Podcasting
Welcome to the world of Business Podcasting! I am your host, Donna Kunde. Since April 2020 I have produced 13,289 podcasts that were created by business owners from 14 countries and have gotten over 274,000 downloads. During this time, I learned a proven method of podcast production that I’m going to break down step-by-step over the next 13 weeks. Are you ready? Because the world needs to hear your voice!

E2 How to Choose Your Podcast Name |IBGR | Donna Kunde
  1. “Podcasting isn’t about lead generation. It’s about sharing your passion!” – Merrill Chandler
  2. A strong brand for your radio show does not necessarily need to share the same name as you or your company. Think about what solution you’re offering to your listeners (which can be either existing customers or prospects).
  3. The title should really be driven by the content of the radio show instead of your brand (unless maybe you’re coca-cola or something).
  4. If your show is an extension of your personal brand, you could have a ‘self titled’ radio show, lot’s of celebrities do right? However, this isn’t so great for discoverability if people don’t already know who you are.
  5. Brand your show one time so your listeners always know how to find you. Add a Season tagline to let listeners know your overarching theme of the quarter.

E3 Your Podcast Brand - The PreWork |IBGR | Donna Kunde
  1. Your radio show will have a personality of its own. It can tie in with your current company brand or take on a whole new persona. In this episode, we will begin creating the branding of your show.
  2. Before your first episode, start by developing a solid concept. This ties in nicely with the brand/name too. Just like any business or marketing process, your show’s concept should be documented - which is especially helpful if you have more than one team member working with you or if someone needs to take over production at a later date. It is also used to market your show.
  3. Who is your audience?
    1. Are they existing customers?
    2. New customers?
    3. Is your show aimed at a certain demographic?
  4. What is the purpose of your show?
    1. If you’re running it for a business or marketing purpose, try and define some objectives or KPI’s - just so everyone is clear on why.
  5. Tone of voice?
    1. Again. If you’re bringing different team members or guests in, it’s always good to just have clarity on how you want it to sound. Ultimately, audio is a personal form of communication so it needs to be an extension of your brand message.
  6. Structure?
    1. All IBGR shows are divided into four 15 minute segments.
    2. You have a choice in whether or not you want to invite a cohost or guests to your show and how often you want to do that.
    3. You can create a series within your season for a special featured guest or do the entire season solo. When inviting guests, you can charge them a fee or let them come on your show for free.
    4. There are many options to choose from in how you structure your show. We will dive into this topic deeper in future courses.
    5. For now, just start thinking about how you want to structure your show.
  7. Remember QVCAA! These are the five pillars that should be the foundation of every business show
  1. Quality
  2. Value
  3. Consistency
  4. Authenticity
  5. Authority

E4 How to Build a Podcast Season - And Why It’s So Important |IBGR | Donna Kunde
  1. Let’s talk about seasons. At IBGR, all of our hosts are business owners so we think in Business Quarters. Every quarter is 13 weeks. Imagine committing to recording four episodes in one sitting every week. That seems doable right? When you do this, you will have a year’s worth of content in 90 days to repurpose in your marketing efforts!
  2. Next week we will go into greater detail about mapping out your season. This episode will get the ideas flowing!
  3. Here’s the trick to quickly selecting relevant show topics for your audience…choose a season theme and start broad. List 13 broad topics that take the listener on a journey.
  4. To determine if a topic is suitable for a whole show, consider this…You’re trying to come up with 13 INTERESTING tips and find enthralling stories for your season! Those tips and stories need to engage an audience quickly and take them on a journey that leaves them in a better place.
  5. Here’s another measure to employ before deciding on a show topic… When you start a conversation on some of your topics with your target market, are they making polite excuses to get to another meeting, playing with their phone or refusing to make eye-contact? If so, either revise your delivery technique (we’ll tackle delivery technique in another episode) or ditch it as an idea for a show. These are powerful social indicators that need to be recognized and acted upon accordingly. If it’s painful for you to think about, it’s probably not a viable show topic. Here’s the bottom line…Your audience is there to learn. Learning doesn’t take place if they are bored.
  6. So let’s say you came up with 10 of the 13 show topics you need. Perhaps your next step is to come up with 3 more. Think about happy clients you could interview in relation to how their experience with you resulted in boosted sales. Or, insert a couple of summary shows like The Mid-Season Wrap Up or The End of Season Wrap up
  7. Another show could be an artfully led discussion with another industry expert on another topic of interest related to your overall show theme.
  8. Or, make two shows every season Wild Card shows where you surprise your audience with topics that come from current events.
  9. Leave a comment below or book a strategy call and I’ll share our season building worksheet!
