Staying true to your voice in every aspect of your business


Today we are exploring why it is essential to stay true to your voice in every aspect of your business.  Whether you are working on branding, marketing, your expertise or even the numbers of your business, it all must be congruent with your voice and your message.  When we get caught up in defining the different aspects of our business, we often forget to realign them with our unique voice and message.

  1. “A brand is the set of expectations, memories, stories and relationships that, taken together, account for a consumers decision to choose one product or service over another.”     ~ Seth Godin
  2. This quote really expresses the importance of understanding your brand and how to express it.  When I work with clients and voicing their brand, it is not something that they usually think about.  They think of branding as logos, colors and visual things.  Those things are the extension of you.  Most of the branding experts I talk to these days explain that most businesses are spending their time branding their products or services but don’t realize that your brand is you and you are your brand.  That is where it all starts.  What is your message and what is your unique style or voice that expresses it? 
  3. The marketplace is so loud and full of so many voices right now it is a challenge to stand out from the crowd.  Very often, we are told to find brands that are doing well and model ourselves and products or services after them and we will surely find success.  The problem here is that we are forgetting the importance of getting clear on what is uniquely YOU and highlighting it.  When you focus on that fresh new perspective or that offer that is perhaps boldly different then what is expected, you will surprise and delight potential clients.  
  4. When you express your brand through every aspect of your business in a way that is in alignment with your unique voice and message, quality is assured and your potential clients know exactly what they can expect when they choose you over another service provider.  As Mr. Godin reminds us, when we stay true to our unique voice of branding, it shows up in the expectations we set, how we express our memories and stories and how we show up in relationships.  I invite you to take inventory of your products and services today and be sure your brand is a reflection of YOU and full of your unique expressions that create the trust, respect and quality your potential customers deserve.

E42  Your Marketing Voice
1. "...branding is your fundamental promise of whom you serve, how you make them feel and what’s different about how you deliver.  Marketing is how you get this message out there once you have defined it." ~ Julie Cottineau2.  What is your favorite way of getting your message out into the world?  What tone of voice is the most attractive to your potential customers?  If we are not careful, we can come up with different voices and tones in our content and how we market it.  This can cause confusion in the minds of potential customers and a confused mind does not buy.  When there are inconsistencies in our promise and the way we communicate it in the marketplace, it dilutes our authority and positioning as an expert. Establishing your marketing voice allows you to be consistent in content creation as well as the way you communicate the value and relevance of your services and products to potential customers.
3.  Establishing your company’s marketing voice is important because it embodies and expresses the personality and values of your message which will then attract the attention of your ideal customers.  The consistent use of language and tone of voice in marketing elicits familiarity and trust so potential customers feel they know the business owner and team.  It no longer feels like marketing because it is just clear communication and storytelling.  Our potential clients get to know our idiosyncrasies, favorite expressions and inflections when we send our messages out into the world. 
4.  The secret to success here is to then use your marketing voice to speak to the challenges, frustrations and pain of potential clients.  Once you get clear on your own unique marketing voice, then tune it to your ideal clients needs and fears.  When you spend time doing market research and listening to the language of ideal clients this “tuning” becomes much easier. Gather some ideal potential clients and ask them to describe the experience they will have when their problem is solved.  Pay attention to the language and tone they use to express themselves.  This is a game changer and don’t forget to have fun using your new marketing voice to send your marketing messages out into the world.

E43  Your voice is even in the numbers and whatever else scares you!
  1. "Never trust your fears.  They don’t know your strength " ~ Athena Singh
  2. What I love about this quote is that it reminds us how easy it is to lose ourselves in fear.  We forget who we are in the presence of fear.  Sometimes we define ourselves by what we are afraid of and not by what we have conquered in the past.  The most common way to look at fear is not to look at it at all.  Many have said that the very thing we are afraid of most is where our strength lies.  Many business owners are so afraid of criticism or failure that they don’t allow themselves to take the bold action that could lead to success.  We can become paralyzed and give up our voice in order to avoid danger or shame.  
  3. As business owners, most of us are facing some kind of fear everyday.  Feeling the fear and doing whatever scares us anyway is often the first lesson of business success.  I have learned to think of courage as taking my heart in my hands and doing whatever needs to be done.  When I look at my business, what scares me the most is the numbers.  I tell myself that I don’t know what I’m doing and that terrible things will happen if I do it wrong.  The voice that speaks when fear is in charge is a really scary, loud voice that I do not recognize as my own.  The practice is to find my true voice in the presence of fear and not give in to the false voice that will trick us into believing that we are weak and without power.
  4. Take a look at the different aspects of your business.  Where have you lost your voice to fear?  Are you putting your trust in the fear?  When we take our heart in our hands and face the area of business that we don’t want to look at, we usually find our voice of power waiting for us.  We remember our strength and forge ahead with new ideas and creative solutions.

​E44 Do you sound like the expert you are?

  1. “An expert is just somebody from out of town with slides" ~ Naomi Judd

  1. When I came across this quote, I laughed out loud.  It is a perfect tongue-in-cheek example of one of my pet peeves.  When I guide people through Business Speaking Mastery,  I find that entrepreneurs have become power point obsessed in presentations.  They are all about getting as much content as possible on the slides.  I blame the fact that we are living in an information age.  We feel more valid as experts when we give presentations containing as much information as possible.  In conversation, we use technical terms and buzzwords in order to prove we know what we are talking about.  It is becoming less and less frequent to just be able to have a conversation with so many experts around.
  2. The art of using your voice to communicate your expertise and listening to others so when you respond you are coming from a place of deep understanding seem to be slowly disappearing.  We sound like experts when our voice reflects the power that comes from experience.  The ability to listen to potential clients and respond from understanding and empathy is what truly positions us as experts.   
  3. I just had an experience where I was at a speakers conference.  There were so many experts in the room trying to prove why their way was THE way to having a successful speaking career, I couldn’t hear any of them after a while.  There were just a few who communicated with me instead of speaking at me.  They may not have been the ones with the most expertise but they are the ones that I connected with the most.  The next time you are doing a presentation or having a sales conversation, I invite you to check in with yourself.  Are you trying to put out as much information as possible in order to give value?  Are you really listening to who you are talking or presenting to? Are you just waiting for your turn to talk again?  Take a moment to breathe and adjust.  Let your tone of voice reflect your expertise.  Remember to let whoever is in front of you know that you care by listening with undivided attention.  Then when you respond you will naturally sound like the expert you are.
