E33 How to recognize the voice of your Business
  1. “There’s got to be a voice deep within you that is untouched by definitions.  And it is there that you become divinely who you are.”     ~ Viola Davis
  2. As entrepreneurs, we are inundated with information and processes that are supposed to help grow our business.  We have coaches and mentors filling us with their short cuts and fast, easy ways to get to where we want our businesses to go.  The business world seems to be flooded with experts who teach every aspect of business these days.  When I began The Magnetic Voice Group, I was also in search of a coach to help me structure my business as I transitioned from artist to entrepreneur.  Coaching is one of the greatest breakthroughs education and self development has ever had.  I learned the trade from pioneer Tony Robbins, at the Robbins Maddanes Training Center.  I was trained in Strategic Intervention which is all about interrupting patterns  in order to change behavior and reach your peak performance levels.
  3. One of the things I love about the Strategic Intervention method is that it unlocks your best self so you can start to rely on your instincts again.  When we interrupt the old patterns and beliefs we uncover our natural, wise, intuitive higher self.  This allows us direct access to the voice deep within us untouched by definitions that Ms. Davis is talking about.  We begin to be able to recognize that voice and commune with it.  As we become better and better at that, we will discover that our business also has a voice.  As entrepreneurs, we start to experience our business as an extension of ourselves with its own wisdom to share.
  4. Today I invite you to start to experience YOUR business as a support and guide.  Learn to recognize its voice by tuning into it.  So often we think of our business as something to be carried, pushed or built up.  What if we thought of it as a wise partner ready to support and guide us?  What if we had regular conversations with it and learned to listen to its voice?

E34  Your relationship with your Business
1. "Know your business and industry better than anyone else in the world. Love what you do or don't do it." ~ Mark Cuban2.  It is widely accepted that we must know our business and industry better than anyone else in the world.  We must be aware of trends and competition in our industry and area of expertise.  As we do our research, we can either be inspired or intimidated by what we learn.  If we are intimidated we might shut down and feel less than.  It might cause feelings of insecurity or lack of confidence.  If we are inspired, we might start to look for what we offer that can be part of the trend or set us apart from the competition.  This will point us to what Mr. Cuban describes as loving what we do.
3.  When you think of your business, what kind of relationship do you have with it?  Does it fill you with love and support?  Do you experience jolts of insecurity or lack of confidence when you think of it? Have you ever considered what kind of relationship you would like to have with your business?  I have heard entrepreneurs describe their business as holding them and their time hostage or as a beast that must constantly be fed.  There have been moments in my life as an entrepreneur, where I that felt no matter how fast I ran, or how much I gave to the business, it would never be enough.  One day I realized that I was thinking of my business as an abusive husband.  What?!?  I remember when it dawned on me, I was shocked.  I was acting like no matter what I did, I couldn’t please it and was constantly waiting for it to withhold its love (money, success) from me.
4.  The most important thing for entrepreneurs to remember is that their business is an entity in and of itself and we determine what kind of relationship we want to have with it.  Some call it their child that needs love to grow and develop.  I like to think of my business as a trusted guide and partner now.  I ask it questions and include it in business decisions.  I have ensured that it has a voice and that, like all relationships, I listen to it and nurture it with love.

E35  Power hour with our Best Partner
  1. "The difference between a pebble and a mountain lies in whom you ask to move it." ~ Marcus Buckingham
  2. When you look up the definition of Power Hour you will find that it is a drinking game to find out how many alcoholic beverages you can consume in an hour.  Hmmm...although some may find this fun, this is not what we are discussing here.  The term Power Hour was coined for business by Gretchen Rubin.  She calls it the time to set aside for all the things on your to do list that don’t have due dates so never get done.  For traders and investors, the Power Hour is the last hour of the trading day when positions are closing.  Another take on the Power Hour is to take an hour out of your day and break it down into 4 income producing activities or key things you want to accomplish in the hour.  Using the Power Hour this way allows you to get extraordinary results from small blocks of time.
  3. What I have discovered is that the most successful people start  their day with a Power Hour of some kind.  Some use it to exercise or meditate.  Some use it to spend time with their kids so they start the day focused on what is most important.  Still others start with gratitude or journaling.  Whatever you decide to do in that 1st hour or Power Hour, always remember that it is the preview of the rest of your day.  A practice that will bring unexpected and extraordinary results is to spend 15 minutes in conference with your business.  Ask it what tasks it needs to accomplish today.  Visualize it supporting you and inspiring you.  Tell it how grateful you are for it.  Imagine all the ways it can uplift and support your clients and your team.  Treat it like the best partner you have ever had.
  4. When we allow our business to be part of our Power Hour, we become grounded and prepared for whatever the day brings us.  When we open the dialogue with our business we make room for wonderful opportunities and fresh ideas in our day to day.  So often the tasks and activities we need to accomplish for our business can feel like we are pushing a huge boulder up a hill.  When we add consulting with our business into our Power Hour routine, we will discover our best business partner.

E36 Tap in and expect Business Breakthroughs

  1. “The challenge is that the day before something is truly a breakthrough, it’s a crazy idea.  And crazy ideas are very risky to attempt.”  ~ Peter Diamandis

  1. Once we start to identify our voice of business, develop a relationship with our business and start to treat our business as a partner, then the work begins.  We will need to start changing our habits to reflect this new partnership.  We will have to learn to trust the guidance we are given and be willing to take action on it.  If you have stayed with me this long, I am guessing you must be open to the idea of your business having a voice and all that means.  The next step is the practice. This is often where I lose people. The idea is cool but the implementation is where the rubber meets the road.
  2. When I first started working on my vocal technique, I realized that they don’t teach you how to practice in conservatory.  They expect that by the time you reach that level you should know how to practice.  The secret that most of us carried in the voice department at Juilliard was that we didn’t really know how to practice.  What I realized was that I was often beating myself up because I couldn’t do whatever I was practicing immediately, so I would stop.  Right before I was about to have a breakthrough, I would often give up because I hated making the attempt over and over without success.  I discovered that everytime I tried and failed I would have to find a new way in order to create a different path to success.  The art of practice is to be certain that a breakthrough is imminent and continue to risk failing or trusting a new path even if you aren’t really sure where it will lead you.
  3. Today I invite you to learn to recognize the voice of your business, develop a trusting relationship with it through partnership and risk taking action on its guidance.  Even if it makes no logical sense.  You may feel silly.  It may seem like a crazy idea but what if that crazy idea is a breakthrough in disguise?  When we are open to the possibility of a business supporting and partnering with us at every turn, we open to creating expansion in all of our business endeavors.
