Donna Kunde - “The Business Owner’s Bookshelf”

PROFIT RADIO..."Grow With Us"

Introduction
“Both success and failure are largely the results of habit!” –  Napoleon Hill

There is a popular saying that knowledge is power. Hill says no. He says that knowledge is only potential power. It only becomes power when, and if, it is organized into definite plans of action and directed to a definite end.

When talking about knowledge and measuring it against what Hill is teaching in Think & Grow Rich, an educated person is not necessarily the one with an abundance of general or specialized knowledge. Instead, it is the person who has developed their faculties of the mind in a way as to be able to acquire anything they want, or its equivalent, without violating the rights of others.

Before you can use your new abilities of the mind to transmute desire into its monetary equivalent, you will need to get good first. This means you will need some sort of specialized knowledge of the service, product or profession you tend to offer in exchange for money. That means you need to become an SME (subject matter expert). The degree that others perceive your expertise and the degree to which you satisfy those expectations will be the amount people are willing to pay. Continue to hone your SME skills and position yourself as the one to solve problems in that area and you will continue to be able to raise your price tag.

I encourage you to listen to this series with an open mind and be willing to receive new ideas. Then continue the conversation in a special group I have created just for you in our Community of Commerce called The Business Owners Bookshelf where I have put downloadable copies of two of the books we will be exploring. The easiest way to listen and engage is inside the IBGR app for Android or iOS. See you on the inside...

Objectives - The WHY
In the chapter on Specialized Knowledge, Napoleon Hills says that “Behind every successful idea is specialized knowledge. Imagination and a great idea combined with specialized knowledge and organized plans is the formula to obtain riches.” Chapters V, VI and VII are meant to work in tandem to achieve this end.

Key Issues - Owner Perspective:
  1. Not recognizing that you are a SME in your chosen field
  2. Not comfortable with self promotion
  3. Not balancing continuing education (too much or too little)

What You Need to Know - The WHAT
  1. There are two kinds of knowledge: Generalized and Specialized
    1. General knowledge, no matter how great in quantity or variety is of little use in growing your business. Many people with general knowledge specialize in teaching knowledge but don’t specialize in the organization or use of knowledge.
    2. Specialized knowledge includes a range of factual, theoretical and practical knowledge, as well as competencies and skills in a particular discipline or profession.
  2. As knowledge is acquired it must be organized and put to use for a definite purpose, through practical plans.
  3. Successful business owners never stop acquiring specialized knowledge related to their major purpose, business or profession.
  4. Unsuccessful business owners make the mistake of believing that the knowledge-acquiring period ends once they finish school.
  5. You don’t need to start at the bottom. “Too many who start at the bottom never manage to lift their heads high enough to be seen by opportunity. Also, the outlook from the bottom is not very bright or encouraging and has a tendency to kill off ambition.”
  6. Surround yourself with others who have and who value specialized knowledge.

What You Need to Do - The HOW
  1. Get good first.
  2. Decide what kind of specialized knowledge you need and the purpose it will be used for.
  3. Make sure the knowledge you obtain will add to your life’s purpose or business goals.
  4. Do your research and get accurate information to ensure you are getting reputable and dependable sources of knowledge.
  5. Remember the amount you invest in the knowledge is the amount you will invest in yourself to grow. Hill says, “Being asked to pay, whether the student makes good grades or poor, has the effect of causing one to follow through with the course when he would otherwise drop it.”
  6. Put your new specialized knowledge to use right away
  7. Charge what you are worth. Hill says, “One of the strange things about human beings is that they value only that which has a price.”

The “To-Do” list from previous episodes:
  1. The sixth sense comes slowly through application of the other principles of the book.
  2. Read Chapter XIV once a month and observe how your thinking expands.
  3. Read the entire book at least three times (pg 92)
  4. Follow the Six Steps to Stimulate Your Subconscious Mind (pg 71)
  5. Read Chapter IV - AUTOSUGGESTION as Hill suggests: “Read the entire chapter aloud once every night, until you become thoroughly convinced that the principle of autosuggestion is sound, that it will accomplish for you all that has been claimed for it. As you read, underscore with a pencil every sentence which impresses you favorably.”
  6. “Follow the foregoing instruction to the letter, and it will open the way for a complete understanding, and mastery of the principles of success.
  7. Read Chapter II - Desire
  8. Write out your six steps on paper
  9. Read your written statement aloud two times per day.
  10. Print and sign your own copy of the Self Confidence Formula
  11. Repeat the Self Confidence Formula until it becomes part of your subconscious.
  12. Practice using all four key ingredients of success: faith, desire, imagination and persistence.
  13. Analyze your definiteness of purpose statement to ensure it is what you want and not what you don’t want. “Our mind becomes magnetized with our dominating thoughts, and by means with which no man is familiar, these “magnets” attract to us the forces, the people, the circumstances of life which harmonize with the nature of our dominating thoughts.”
  14. One sound idea is all you need to achieve success and goal achievement begins with a state of mind. The rest of the book describes ways to create useful ideas. Decide now what your definiteness of purpose is and write it down. Then uplevel it.
  16. Read your written statement aloud two times per day.
  17. All success begins with a state of mind. Failure happens on autopilot.
  18. Your dominating thoughts attract the forces, people and circumstances that match those thoughts. We have a built in servo mechanism that weeds out opportunities deemed unimportant and shows us what our thoughts tell it we want to find.
