Success Habit #2: Harmony- The Myth of Work-Life Balance with Londina & Donna

Work-life balance. Is there such a thing? If there is such a thing, do we really want it? 

This has been a very popular catch phrase in business. But let’s take a minute to examine it closer. If we imagine a scale, like the scale of justice, with two sides on a pendulum, and you wanted your life and business to be balanced, that would mean you would need to put equal amounts of time into your business and your life. This is the only way to balance the scale. 

Think about it this way, do you really want to have equal portions of both? Or do you want to build a business that allows you to live the life of your dreams?

If you aren’t careful, your business will end up running you and your work-life scale will swing in the direction of no life….all work.

Objectives - The WHY
Work-Life Balance implies an equal distribution of time and assumes equilibrium. But statistically, this is not possible. In reality, we spend a majority of our lives working - which results in the illusion of imbalance as we chase after the ever-elusive, cultural trophy of “work-life balance,” yet fail to attain it. What we should really be seeking is harmony in our schedules. Not an even distribution, but a meaningful one. 

Key Issues - Owner Perspective:

  1. The illusion that our time can and should be balanced
  2. The challenges of working from home 
  3. Doing more does not balance the scales (you can’t bank time)
  4. Knowing what is important and prioritizing your time accordingly
  5. Choose quality over quantity
  6. Build a self managing organization and work to replace yourself


What You Need to Know - The WHAT
  1. There are only 24 hours in a day which means that’s all you get. You can’t bank time so use it wisely. 
  2. You started your business seeking freedom, don’t let the myth of work-life balance enslave you. Working from home can create its own set of challenges. Be the captain of your calendar and boss you would want to work for. 
  3. Doing more does not balance the scales. Yes, there is plenty of work to be done, but does it need to all be done by you?
  4. While the idea of work-life balance is a myth, you can be imbalanced in your work and your life - look at your surroundings to see how you are creating. Do you see clutter and chaos? If so, you are imbalanced in your thinking and your calendar. The solution is not to strive for balance - what you need is harmony. Harmony is an inner tranquility that allows you to have greater success, influence and power because there is a quiet calm about that that allows creativity and decreases stress which leads to great productivity. 
  5. Build a self managing organization and work to replace yourself. What can you do to put yourself out of a job and become the CEO of your organization. 

What You Need to Do​​ - The HOW
  1. Go back and listen to our show on Habit #1 - Goal Achievement. With only 24 hours in a day, making time to get really clear on what is most important is imperative.
  2. Be the boss you would want to work for. Make time for yourself and your family, know and live by your values, schedule down time to refresh and reset. When you work this way, your life in harmony allows you to have the things you desire.
  3. Own your calendar so it doesn’t own you. Know the warning signs of being out of harmony. It shows up as an imbalance in your physical environment and relationships. Go back and listen to Habit #1 - as counterproductive as it might seem, stopping to plan and think into your to-do list will reveal unnecessary items that should be done by others or not done at all to move your business forward. 
  4. Build a self managing organization and work to replace yourself. Live your vision, mission, and values daily and use them as a reference for how you prioritize your work. 
  5. Enlist help whenever possible. Create a team of champions who want to help you succeed.
