While Black Americans mightily contributed to the economic growth of this nation, many were snubbed from the historical and financial benefits of their inventions. In short, Blacks were not eligible for patent protection. Further, many enslaved Americas of African descent were intellectually robbed by their so-called owners, leaving the so-called masters unjustly enriched to reap all the benefits. Every podcaster and radio jock in the world has this man to thank for the transmission of their voices to the masses. As a kid, James Maceo West was intrigued by electronics; so much so that he chose to study physics in university. In 1960, after landing a gig at Bell Labs (now Nokia Bell Labs), he invented the foil electret microphone, which was more compact, sensitive, and powerful than anything of its time. It is widely used in many applications today! Jennings was the first Black American to be granted a patent New York tailor Thomas Jennings developed a waterless technique for cleaning termed “dry scouring”, and in 1821, became the very first Black American to apply for and be granted a patent for his invention. Mr. Jennings used his newfound wealth and influence as a civil rights activist fighting against the American enslavement system. Be sure to thank Thomas Jennings as you are dressing for work in the morning in your favorite dry cleaned and pressed shirt or blouse.
