Show  – What is the New Normal
Theme – A Changing World
Talking Points – Understanding the New Normal

Welcome to the FIRST show of Season 6 Building YOU to BUILD your BUSINESS with Ravin Papiah!

Introduction
WELCOME to the FIRST Show of Season 6!
If you are not Aware, You Are Nowhere!
Leadership Is Influence, Nothing More, Nothing Less! John C. Maxwell

If Leadership is Influence, then Leadership starts by SELF-LEADERSHIP!

AS USUAL, I am really excited for today’s show – Why? Because today I will AGAIN be talking about YOU! Yes, YOU! The Good YOU, The Amazing YOU, the Incredible YOU, and a bit of the BAD YOU!

The Corona Virus, has manifested itself some two years ago, bringing the world to a standstill, and causing damages in the economy and in loss of millions of lives from around the globe. It has forced us into a new way of living – what people are calling now the “New Normal”

What is the New Normal?

IN TODAY’S SHOW, I am going to share with you some insights into this new normal we are all living in due to the Pandemic, and lessons that I have personally learned during my crisis so far….

  • It is a CRISIS!
  • How should we behave during a crisis such as covid19?
  • The Do’s and Don’ts
  • What opportunities a Crisis brings with it?

THRIVING IN THE NEW NORMAL

SEGMENT ONE – What is Covid19?

On 31 December 2019, WHO was informed of cases of pneumonia of unknown cause in Wuhan City, China. A novel coronavirus was identified as the cause by Chinese authorities on 7 January 2020 and was temporarily named “2019-nCoV”.

The current scientific consensus is that the virus is most likely of zoonotic origin, from bats or another closely-related mammal.

'CO' stands for corona, 'VI' for virus, and 'D' for disease. Formerly, this disease was referred to as '2019 novel coronavirus' or '2019-nCoV.' The COVID-19 virus is a new virus linked to the same family of viruses as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and some types of common cold.

The most recent common ancestor (MRCA) of all coronaviruses is estimated to have existed as recently as 8000 BCE, although some models place the common ancestor as far back as 55 million years or more, implying long term coevolution with bat and avian species.

Globally, as of 5:33pm CEST, 7 July 2021, there have been 184,324,026 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 3,992,680 deaths, reported to WHO. As of 7 July 2021, a total of 3,032,056,355 vaccine doses have been administered.

How can someone be infected by COVID-19? As per WHO,

A person can be infected when aerosols or droplets containing the virus are inhaled or come directly into contact with the eyes, nose, or mouth.

The virus can also spread in poorly ventilated and/or crowded indoor settings, where people tend to spend longer periods of time.

People may also become infected by touching surfaces that have been contaminated by the virus when touching their eyes, nose or mouth without cleaning their hands.

There are many things you can do to keep yourself and your loved ones safe from COVID-19. Know your risks to lower risks. Follow these basic precautions:

  • Follow local guidance: Check to see what national, regional and local authorities are advising so you have the most relevant information for where you are.
  • Keep your distance: Stay at least 1 metre away from others, even if they don’t appear to be sick, since people can have the virus without having symptoms.

  • Wear a mask:  Wear a well-fitting three-layer mask, especially when you can’t physically distance, or if you’re indoors. Clean your hands before putting on and taking off a mask.

  • Avoid crowded places, poorly ventilated, indoor locations and avoid prolonged contact with others. Spend more time outdoors than indoors.

  • Ventilation is important: Open windows when indoors to increase the amount of outdoor air.

  • Avoid touching surfaces, especially in public settings or health facilities, in case people infected with COVID-19 have touched them. Clean surfaces regularly with standard disinfectants.

  • Frequently clean your hands with soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand rub. If you can, carry alcohol-based rub with you and use it often.

  • Cover your coughs and sneezes with a bent elbow or tissue, throwing used tissues into a closed bin right away. Then wash your hands or use an alcohol-based hand rub.

  • Get vaccinated: When it’s your turn, get vaccinated. Follow local guidance and recommendations about vaccination.

SEGMENT TWO – Covid 19 is a Crisis!

Covid 19 is a crisis!

Crisis is quite common. During a crisis, bad leadership (SELF/TEAM) precipitates a faster fall while good leadership offers steadiness and perseverance.

There are never two good consecutive days in a leader’s life, which means that leaders should be used to rough times. A crisis is several consecutive bad days that you can’t walk away from.

My Mentor, John C. Maxwell,  defines a crisis as “an intense time of difficulty requiring a decision that will be a turning point.”

With everything going on in the world right now, our current global situation certainly meets that definition! The good news is, this crisis—like all crises—will eventually pass. The challenge for the leader ( for YOU!) is to stay strong and steady through the duration.

Why do you think a crisis makes it easier to distinguish between good and bad leaders, that is YOU because everyone of us we are Leaders, it is just that we are not aware of it?
  • Good Leaders can thrive during a crisis, they can manage it safely to the harbour, and hold it steady, but with bad leadership, the crisis deepens quickly and you can fall pretty fast with it
  • Everything Rises and Falls in Leadership
  • A crisis shows the Leader up (Good or Bad)
  • A crisis brings the best out of a Leader
  • During difficult times, a good leader says, this is my moment, this is the reason why I was born! A crisis is an incubator for emerging Leaders
  • Crisis – an opportunity to ADD value to people
  • How we view things determine how we do things – JC Maxwell

What experience do you have in leading during a time of crisis?
  • Put People FIRST – start by YOU!
  • With Corona, it’s the safety of the people, that is YOUR SAFETY FIRST! Its incredibly easy, right? Because if you put your safety first, you put everyone around you to safety as well
  • As a Leader, its all about the people, it is not about ME/You!

What makes a crisis seem so urgent?

SEGMENT THREE – Battling Distractions

A crisis is a distraction for the majority of people. It pulls you away from your life focus and towards something else. Whether it’s the breaking news alerts on the evening news, or a panicked report from the Stock Market, there are plenty of things seeking to pull a your attention away from the issue at hand.

You experience three things:
  1. Mind Wandering: Thinking about what could happen instead of focusing on what is happening.
  2. Negative Thinking: Feeling as if everything that could go wrong is going wrong.
  3. Uncertain Anxiety: Fear of the unknown which amplifies other fears.

When you get distracted, you lose sight of reality, lose touch with hope, and fall prey to anxiety, which in turn, infects the people in your surroundings. Just because someone else’s sky is falling it doesn’t mean that your sky is falling too! We must discipline ourselves to stay focused in times of crisis.

Why do you think it is so easy for people to get distracted during a crisis?
  • Watching the TV, the news… and its all so negative
  • Mind wandering
  • Fear, lack of faith, lack of belief, leading to lack of actions

What are some good ways you can maintain focus during these times of distraction?
  • You cant control what you cant control, so why put your energy in trying that?
  • What you can control is YOU, your thoughts, your actions, your lemonade…
  • Do the things you’ve always wanted to do but you didn’t have time to: reading, writing a book, cultivating your garden, take that course, refine your public speaking skills, launch a Show…BE IN ACTION…POSITIVELY
  • The Pandemic is giving us that time, WHICH WE DID’NT HAVE, to PAUSE and REFLECT! Where are we going, what are we doing, is this where we want to head?

What are some helpful ideas for positive thinking during times of challenge?

SEGMENT FOUR – CHARACTER IN A CRISIS
Crisis reveals our character in many ways:

It shows who we are on the inside, and puts our ability to adapt to shifting circumstances on display. As my Mentor John C. Maxwell says: “You’re not made in a crisis—you’re revealed.”

Often people think that a crisis forges character, but that’s not true: Our choices shape our character, and a crisis simply reveals the results of those choices. People who lapse into complaining mode, or who begin blaming others when things get tough, are people whose bad choices are being brought to light. The good news is that the adversity that unmasks us today can build character in us tomorrow—if we are willing to learn from the mistake.

We can learn to shift for the better, even in the midst of crisis. Just like successful football coaches are able to make adjustments at halftime, great people/ great leaders for that sake, can adapt to the uncertainty of the moment and find a proactive solution that creates forward momentum.

Adaptable people/leaders can turn adversity into advantage.
  • When a human being gets squeezed, what’s inside, positive or negative, comes out (orange: orange juice, lemons; lemonade)
  • Choices make us, crisis reveals us
  • We have control over our choices, we don’t have control over our conditions
  • You cant MOAN and LEAD at the same time – its One or the Other
  • Leading means giving HOPE, and moaning does not give people hope
  • Most people find strength in things that are outside of them – money, power, titles – well, that’s a problem
  • Most of the things that makes up a leader is on the inside: integrity, wisdom, confidence, vulnerability, joy, passion, compassion, intuition, these things come from life experiences, from life’s trial, from the deepest part of a person’s soul, YOU CAN FAKE THEM, YOU CANT BUY THEM BECAUSE they are not for sale!
  • Life asks you a question that gauges your effectiveness and wisdom: What have you been through? Show me your scars - Where are your scars? Authenticity counts, and the best route to an authentic life is through your scars!
