Everything a business owner needs to start, grow or exit a business. Grow With Us.

Introduction
Great to have you tune in to Built your Core where we explore and discuss topics around how you build the people part of your business. As you are flowing through the stages of growth you might upon reflection find yourself pondering this question….. are there areas in my business where I have settled? Is it possible that there is a gap between your work expectations and what is being achieved? If so why? You get what you except this was something I learned throughout my business career and within my time in BNI. The lowest standard you accept is what you will get.

You did not get into business to settle and certainly not around your people. You are investing in finding the best talent, developing them and retaining those who are on the journey with you to help you realize your vision.

In the last 5 shows our focus has been on building and strengthening your foundations, creating information that is readily accessible to your team. We discussed the importance of values, standard operating procedures, position descriptions and how building all of this leads to clarity for your team.

Today we continue to connect the dots, our focus on today’s show is around work expectations and how to avoid the “You get what you accept” trap. Work expectations need to be set, reviewed and communicated across the board and be in alignment with your overall vision.

The key to successful individual excellence lies in the combination of skills and mindset. Adding people to our team is important and it is our responsibility to set people up for success. We need to consider a person’s behaviour, their values (what motivates them towards action and how can we best inspire them) and what their natural talents and skills are.

Show Objectives
In today’s show we zoom in on the reasons why you need to set your work expectations. By defining and setting work expectations we avoid confusion, reduce non-performance and increase results.

 Key Issues:
  1.  Work expectations are not fully developed, often only verbally shared (a different version depending on the leader(s)) causing misalignment
  2.  People finding  themselves guessing vs knowing doing the best they can
  3.  Teams are unclear on  how to achieve business goals and what overall success means
  4.  Work Expectations are unclear when used as part of the performance process

What You Need to Know
  1. First step,  is for you to get clear on what your expectations are, having them in your head and not being able to put them in some sort of understanding will make it challenging to share
  2. Understand your why then articulate them in written form
  3. Take into consideration the uniqueness of your  people, how will you best communicate your message throughout the business
  4.  Stop guessing, start knowing
  5. Work expectations allow your team to become high performers
  6. Be clear on your business goals and the results your business  wants to achieve, question if they are achievable

What You Need to Do
  1.  Get the work expectations into written format and make them available to your team,  firstly create clarity for you then test it with others
  2.  Share your expectations, include the unspoken expectations.
  3.  Invest time in coaching your managers on communication, if a smaller team you might consider some external support
  4.  Explain how the work expectations can be achieved, gain buy in by sharing the steps
  5.  Seek feedback from your team, telling vs sharing
  6.  Review work expectations regularly with your team, ever changing
